Potatoes were first cultivated about 5,000 to 7,000 years ago in Peru. They were brought to Spain in the 16th century by Spanish explorers, then they traveled to Italy, northern Europe, and then Bermuda.


Most of the nutrients in potatoes are in the skin; they have more potassium than bananas.


Forty five million pounds of potatoes are produced every year in the United States. Americans consume 30 pounds of potatoes per person every year. One fourth of potatoes in America are consumed as French fries.


They are the second most consumed food in the United States (after milk).


They are a relative of tobacco and the tomato plant.


The Idaho or Russet Burbank potato we are most familiar with was developed in 1871.


1952 Mr. Potato head was born.


Potatoes were the first vegetable grown in space.
